Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Search for your product or service at
www.google.com. The websites that the
results page displays are not there by accident but because owners of those
websites have worked on making their sites rank high. There are
thousands, or even millions of results for each search on Google. But only
the first 10 or so websites attract traffic. New businesses have emerged
and existing businesses have grown leaps and bounds for companies that have

the key factors they use to rank sites high.
Search Engines that matter
Google, Yahoo and MSN are
the three most popular search engines across the world. 9 out of 10 people
wishing to find something on the internet use one of the three. They are
even gaining popularity in non-English speaking countries like China, Japan
and Korea.
Factors that make a site rank
high
The factors these search engines
employ to rank sites high are very similar. But the weights they allot to
individual factors can vary between different search engines. Here are the
different factors:
-
Meta Tags: These include the title
of a page, meta description and meta keywords. Look at the top left corner
of your computer screen. SEO India, Search Engine Optimization India @
Morebynet.com is the title of this page. This tells the search engine
what this page is about and is an important element for website
optimization. Meta description and keywords are embedded in the html code of
the page which again provide more details about the page to the search
engines.
-
Page content: Words or phrases
likely to be used to search your web page need to be judiciously used on the
page. How often these words or phrases are used, and their placement and
prominence on the page are important.
-
Site popularity: If other sites on
the internet link to your site they contribute to its popularity, which is
again an important element to make your site rank high. How many sites link
to your site and their relevance to the content on your site are considered.
Why is SEO considered
complicated?
You solved equations with one variable in
your math class at school. As you grew up your learned to solve equations
with two and three variables. These complicated the equation solving process
but was still manageable. Imagine the complexity in solving an equation with
about 50 variables. It's probably unmanageable. This is what you need to do
to understand the functioning of a search engine algorithm. The judicious
use of the 50 or so micro factors is required to make a site rank well on
the search engines. It gets trickier as you realize that what works well on
one search engine doesn't work at all on on the other.
How can we get your site to rank high?
Five to six years back search engine
algorithms were not as complicated. They followed simple criteria. We have
been optimizing sites since then. This allowed us to understand the
different factors just when they were introduced. By experimenting and
optimizing different sites over a period of time we have learned what works
and what doesn't. What worked earlier and not now. And, what works today,
which was irrelevant earlier.
